Tinnitus Evaluation & Treatment
Tinnitus, or a ringing in the ears, is an affliction that strikes a large percentage of the population.
Because tinnitus is a symptom rather than a disease, treatment should focus on the underlying cause of the problem.
Our audiologists perform tinnitus matching, a specialized assessment that helps identify the pitch and loudness of your tinnitus. By pinpointing these characteristics, we can tailor sound therapy and management strategies to your specific needs, ensuring a more personalized and effective treatment experience.
What Causes Tinnitus?
There are many possible causes of tinnitus. These include hearing loss, noise exposure, hypertension, stress, migraines, head or neck trauma, impacted earwax, ototoxic medications and benign tumors.
The exact cause isn’t always known. Those who suffer from tinnitus can experience side effects such as fatigue, loss of sleep, memory and concentration problems, anxiety, irritability and depression.
Treatment and Rehabilitation
Our audiologists use a combination of evidence-based strategies to help reduce the impact of tinnitus and improve daily comfort. Treatment is tailored to each patient and may include the following approaches:
Hearing Aids
Hearing loss is one of the most common contributors to tinnitus. By restoring access to soft environmental sounds the brain has been missing, hearing aids reduce the need for the brain to “fill in the gaps,” which often makes tinnitus far less noticeable and less bothersome. Many devices also offer built-in tinnitus management features.
Sound Therapy / Masking
Masking introduces gentle sound—like white noise, ocean waves, or soft tones—to help shift focus away from tinnitus. This can be done through hearing aids, bedside devices, or smartphone apps, and often provides relief, especially in quiet environments.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) & Stress Management
Because stress and anxiety often worsen tinnitus, audiologists may incorporate CBT-based strategies or refer patients to specialized providers. Techniques such as relaxation exercises, mindfulness, sleep support, and stress-reduction routines can significantly decrease the perceived intensity and emotional burden of tinnitus.
